Best Feature Doc Win for A Sh'mal World
A Sh’mal World, produced by 2008 DI graduates Michelle Friedline and Laureen Ricks, recently took top honors in the documentary feature category at the 2009 New Mexico Filmmakers Showcase. A Sh’mal World, follows the trials and triumphs of a colorful social worker named Sh’mal Ellenberg, who attempts to transform the lives of his mentally-ill, drug-addicted clients, while reconciling with the fact that his eldest son is an addict who struggles to keep off the streets. Over 70 filmmakers submitted their work to this annual four-day event, which took place at the Guild Cinema in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
