JOURNALISM STUDY-ABROAD MAY 2011
PARTICIPANTS

TAKA HAMADA -- Hi, I'm a 23-year-old third-year Journalism
major with a minor in Theatre. I'm from Japan and have been in the states
for about six years now. I love to explore around the world, although
this is my first trip to Europe. And, of course, I love to shoot
photos, but I'm still learning, so I hope this trip will teach me some new
things. I'm so excited to explore Berlin and take photos with you
guys.

KATIE
OSBORNE -- I'm a 20-year-old journalism junior. I'm minoring in Religion and Latin American studies because
I have too many interests. I took my first photography course with
Professor Freeman last semester and had a grand ol'
time learning how to use my camera and be more assertive. I have traveled
some in Western Europe, and I spent a couple months in Madrid, Spain this
past summer. While there, I partook
in the post-World Cup celebrations and learned a number of chants en Español. However, I have not been to Berlin (or Germany
at all), so I'm excited to explore another wonderful city.

ALISON
KRUEGER -- I'm a 21-year-old
Advertising major with a minor in Business and Entrepreneurship. I
love taking photographs and can't wait to take my first actual photography
course. I've been to Germany once before but have never visited
Berlin. I can speak some German and am excited to have an opportunity
to be able to practice a language as well as experience such an interesting
culture.

LYN
KRAMER – I am a 21-year-old journalism junior,
concentrating on photojournalism. I am the fundraising chair for the
Society of Professional Journalists, and I freelance for The Independent
Florida Alligator. This will be my first experience outside the United
States, and I absolutely cannot wait!

GENE
RODRICK --
Hi! I am a second year Food Science and Human Nutrition major in the
college of Agriculture and Life Sciences. I have lived in Gainesville my
whole life and have always wanted to be a Gator! I have always been
interested in photography, but I have never taken a class about it. I have
never been to Germany before, so I’m very excited to go to Berlin and
explore the city. I can hardly wait to meet new, interesting people and
soak up the culture, while learning a lot about photojournalism along the
way.

CHRISSY
HARRIS -- Guten
Tag! I'm a 20-year-old Journalism
major. My focus will be photography, so I'm excited about taking my first
UF photography class. I'm from Panama City, Fla., so I grew up on the
beach. The only time I've ever been out of the country is to visit Puerto
Rico (which is actually a U.S. territory so it barely counts!). I am ready
for an awesome class and an incredible trip to Germany.

BURTON
HOHMAN -- Guten
Tag! I’m 19 (but will be 20 on the trip) and in my second year at UF
as an Advertising major. I was from the Tampa area, but my parents
moved to Texas when I got into UF so now I call Gainesville home. My
mom is a German citizen and lived there for 20 years; when I was little I
grew up speaking some basic German. I am by no means fluent, so you
should still plan on bringing a pocket dictionary! I have always loved
looking at cool pictures, and I am really looking forward to taking my
first photography class. The only other time I have been to Berlin
was for the 2006 FIFA World Cup which was amazing, but I am really looking
forward to seeing the city again.

ERIK
KNUDSEN -- I am a 24-year-old
student majoring in Photojournalism. This trip excites me. In the past, I
have taken a few photography courses but have never traveled out of the
country to do so. Taking pictures in Berlin for two weeks sounds amazing.
My mother lives in the Netherlands, and that is where I plan on going for
the remainder of the summer. I can't wait to meet everyone and share in the
good times with all of you. Let's make the most of it!

JUNIE
JOSEPH -- I am a third
year Political Science major. I am excited about the photojournalism course
in Berlin. I am looking forward to meeting my fellow scholars. This is my
first trip to Europe and I am looking forward to every moment of it. I have
been daydreaming about this trip everyday. As for the course, I love taking
pictures, I enjoy learning about people from
different ethnic groups and cultures, and geography. This is my first
Journalism course. I am looking forward to learning a
lot of new techniques, etc. "Here I come Berlin! "--
Hier komme Ich Berlin!" (Hopefully I said it right :-)

|
COURTNEY ARNOLD -- I'm a 20-year-old Psychology senior with a
minor in Anthropology. I love taking pictures. I take pictures of my son
all the time. I have been out of the U.S. before to the Caribbean area but
never to Europe, and I am super excited for this opportunity. This is a
chance of a lifetime. I am so excited to meet each of you and share some
amazing memories.

ALEXANDRA
SOLANO --
I'm an 18-year-old Advertising
& Psychology major at the University
of Miami. I love
taking pictures and I am fascinated by good photography. I also enjoy
traveling to distant places and learning about different cultures. So this
trip may be perfect for me! Last year, I studied abroad with UF in the Netherlands
for six weeks and I absolutely loved it. I also got to partake in World Cup
celebrations, but mine were a little less exuberant. (It turned out okay
though because I'm from Spain.)
I can't wait to see all that Berlin
has to offer and I'm ready to have an experience of a lifetime with what
looks like an awesome group!

MEREDITH
RUTLAND -- I am a sophomore journalism major. I work for the Independent
Florida Alligator as a city writer. Mainly, I cover Gainesville City
Commission and Alachua County Commission, which aren't as boring as they
sound. I'm also really interested in science news. I'm fairly new to
photography, but I've always wanted to study abroad, and this seemed like
the best way for me to learn new skills and see Europe at the same time.
I'm terrible at foreign languages, but my goal is to leave Berlin with a
few phrases memorized (and to eat some German food).

|
JOHN
FREEMAN -- I'm the professor
taking the group to Berlin. This photo was taken during my first experience
living in Germany, when I was in the second, third and fourth grades
in Rodenbach, near Ramstein
Air Force Base. (I've grown some since then.) My father was later assigned
to Berlin, where I graduated from high school. I'm a real sucker for
nostalgia, and look forward to returning to this fascinating city for my
seventh study-abroad trip. My family thinks that red hat belonged to my
twin sister, but no one remembers why I'm wearing it.
