JOU 4364 Advanced Web Apps / Spring 2024

THIS IS A SKILLS COURSE. You will complete coding assignments every week. Skills are learned by doing!

PREREQUISITE: JOU 3363 Intro to Web Apps. If you did not complete the prerequisite course with a C or better, you may not enroll in this course. Knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript is required.

• Automate the Boring Stuff with Python, 2nd edition, by Al Sweigart (No Starch Press, 2019). ISBN: 1593279922

Description: Learn how to create and manage backend (server-side) scripts and databases for web apps. Learn how to acquire datasets via web scraping. Students will propose and develop original projects.

This course is specifically focused on building apps for news and journalism applications; the skill set can be used in other fields, and Python is a very popular language for use in machine learning.

Students who complete this course will be able to:

• Create and manage SQL databases
• Use the Python programming language to scrape openly available web pages and data sources to create new databases
• Write programs in Python
• Create functional web apps using Flask, a Python web framework
